Javier García, Director General of the Spanish Association for Standardization (UNE), has been re-elected for another two years as Vice President of Technical Management of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), completing a four-year term. García, initially elected for the role in 2021 for the 2023-2024 period, has now been reappointed for 2025-2026.
The appointment was confirmed during the ISO General Assembly held last week in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, where Javier García was present alongside Mónica Sanzo, UNE's Director of Cooperation and International Relations.
“I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust that ISO members have once again placed in me. Continuing my work as Vice President of Technical Management provides an opportunity for Spain’s productive sectors to continue leading global standards that will help them successfully navigate major challenges. The one who writes the standard defines the market," said Javier García, Director General of UNE and ISO Vice President.
This appointment also reflects the significant influence and reputation of Spanish standardization worldwide, as well as UNE’s efforts, making Spain one of the most powerful standardization bodies globally and an international benchmark. Currently, Spanish experts lead over 150 presidencies and secretariats of technical bodies in international and European standardization organizations (ISO, IEC, CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI), with many Spanish standards serving as the foundation for global standards.
Javier García, who holds a degree in Chemical Sciences, a master's in Innovation Management, and postgraduate studies in Business Administration and Marketing Management, has worked for more than 25 years in the Spanish standardization body, where he has been the Director General since 2017.
Additionally, García holds significant international recognition, with various leadership roles in global and European standardization organizations. Throughout his career, he has served as Technical Vice President of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and was part of the Technical Standardization Board of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). He is currently a member of the Administrative Board of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
In his role at ISO, Javier García is responsible for ensuring that new international technical standards align with ISO's 2030 strategy, which focuses on promoting areas such as the green and energy transition, digital transformation, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) objectives, and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
